MUSIC JUNQUI: OLD AS CHEESE: The Doors – Light My Fire (Live In Europe 1968)

The Doors were founded by Ray Manzarek and Jim Morrison in Los Angeles in 1965. They released their eponymous debut album, which contained their hit single Light My Fire, in 1967 and went on to be one of the most controversial and influential rock acts of the sixties. Jim Morrison’s early death in Paris in 1971 only served to fuel their legend and both he and the band have continued to enjoy iconic status for more than thirty years.
You guys should really watch one of their documentaries on Netflix. They are an amazing band and Jim Morrison’s story is pretty dope, too.

MUSIC JUNQUI: OLD AS CHEESE: No Doubt – Just A Girl

Take this pink ribbon off my eyes
I’m exposed
And it’s no big surprise
Don’t you think I know
Exactly where I stand
This world is forcing me
To hold your hand
‘Cause I’m just a girl, little ‘ol me
Don’t let me out of your sight
I’m just a girl, all pretty and petite
So don’t let me have any rights

Oh…I’ve had it up to here!
The moment that I step outside
So many reasons
For me to run and hide
I can’t do the little things I hold so dear
‘Cause it’s all those little things
That I fear

‘Cause I’m just a girl I’d rather not be
‘Cause they won’t let me drive
Late at night I’m just a girl,
Guess I’m some kind of freak
‘Cause they all sit and stare
With their eyes

I’m just a girl,
Take a good look at me
Just your typical prototype

Oh…I’ve had it up to here!
Oh…am I making myself clear?
I’m just a girl
I’m just a girl in the world…
That’s all that you’ll let me be!
I’m just a girl, living in captivity
Your rule of thumb
Makes me worry some

I’m just a girl, what’s my destiny?
What I’ve succumbed to Is making me numb
I’m just a girl, my apologies
What I’ve become is so burdensome
I’m just a girl, lucky me
Twiddle-dum there’s no comparison

Oh…I’ve had it up to!
Oh…I’ve had it up to!!
Oh…I’ve had it up to here!

MUSIC JUNQUI: OLD AS CHEESE: VIDEO: MARIAH CAREY “HONEY”

This is one of my favorites. Mariah is legend. The song is bomb and the video is delightful!  The song was written by Mariah, Puff Daddy, Q-Tip and Stevie J, all of whom served as the song’s producers as well. This song used two samples: “Hey DJ” by the World’s Famous Supreme Team, and “The Body Rock” by the Treacherous Three. “Honey” remixed MC’s career, pushing her farther into hip-hop than she had gone before. In the words of DJ Maximum Shine “Its not a party if you don’t play Mariah!”.

FASHION JUNQUI: FUBU JUNE 1997 COMMERCIAL

FUBU is a clothing company. It includes casual wear, sports wear, a suit collection, eyewear, belts, and shoes for the African-American community in the sense of economic investment but not to be exclusively worn by African Americans. The name is sometimes considered an acronym for “For Us By Us”, implying the product line was produced for a primarily African-American market. The original meaning of FUBU was “Five Urban Brothers United,” but the “For U, by U” line later took root as the clothing line expanded.
The company was founded in 1992 by Daymond John with a line of hats made in his house in Hollis, Queens, New York. According to the company website, John mortgaged his own home for $100,000 and with that seed money he and his three friends Carl Brown, J. Alexander Martin, and Keith Perrin, turned half of his house into a factory and the other half into living space.

In my opinion the men of FUBU are geniuses! Love them!

MUSIC JUNQUI: OLD AS CHEESE: BIG L “PUT IN ON”

Lamont Coleman (May 30, 1974-February 15, 1999), also known by his stage name Big L, was an American rapper. Big L was a member of the hip hop collective D.I.T.C. He released his debut solo album, Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous, in March 1995. While working on his second album, Big L was shot and killed. The Big Picture, an album of songs he had recorded and a cappella recordings completed by producers and guest MCs, was released posthumously in August 2000. After his death in 1999, DJ Premier has made a tribute to Big L on his Sirius/XM satellite show and a song entitled “Full clip” that featured Guru of the rap group Gang Starr.

“Human life is sacred, even though we been killin each other off for not a damn good reason for years”-Big L

MUSIC JUNQUI: OLD AS CHEESE: JAY-Z FT BEYONCE “03′ BONNIE AND CLYDE”

Jay-Z and Beyoncé do their own spin on 2Pac’s classic“Me And My Girlfriend”, only with a twist: While 2Pac was actually talking about his gun, Jay’s talking about his actual girlfriend — making it a romanticized Bonnie and Clyde-type story that many listeners initially took 2Pac’s version as (but considerably less violent)

Kanye West does production duty, and he keeps the main sound of 2Pac’s original while still making it sound fresh

The song was released on Jay’s 2002 double album The Blueprint²: The Gift and the Curse, and it was one of the biggest hits on the album: It was not only Jay’s second top ten single, but Beyoncé’s first top ten single as a solo artist. Check out the video below:

MUSIC JUNQUI: I LOVE TO WASH IN YO’ OLD BATH WATER!!

Figured I’d bring a little flavor from my past today with NO DOUBT! Man in High School I was the biggest No Doubt fan…and “Bathwater” was one of my favorite songs from their Return of Saturn album! Check it out Homeskillet!

You and your museum of lovers
The precious collection you’ve housed in your covers
My simpleness threatened by my own admission

And the bags are much too heavy
In my insecure condition
My pregnant mind is fat full with envy again

But I still love to wash in your old bathwater
Love to think that you couldn’t love another
I can’t help it…you’re my kind of man…

MUSIC JUNQUI: Single Black Female

20110516-112707.jpg

I don’t know why but when I was going through Chemo, this song was the song that kept me going. It still keeps me going. I ing this song every time I’m having a bad day to make me feel better! My favorite line is in the first verse.

“She had hair so long that it looked weave, then she cut it all off.
Now she look like Eve.
She be dealing with some issues that you can’t believe.
Single Black female addicted to retail
And well…”

LIFESTYLE JUNQUI: “I’m a Barbie Girl!” [OLD AS CHEESE]

AQUA

“I’m a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world. Life in plastic, it’s fantastic!”

Those lyrics likely bring you back to elementary school when Aqua was the “it” group. Singing along was irresistible, and Aqua was everyone’s GUILTY PLEASURE. And the ensuing lawsuit scandal with Mattel concerning how the song affected Barbie’s image only added to Aqua’s popularity…. Anywho, here’s Barbie Girl!

[BTW We here at theJUNQUI.com do NOT support woman who believe they are Barbies, We are REAL women...NOT plastic toys.] (more…)

MUSIC JUNQUI: OLD AS CHEESE: MARVIN GAYE X LET’S GET IT ON

marvin

Marvin Gaye performing “Let’s Get It On” Live.  The live concert was on October 10th 1976, before a sold out audience in Edenhall concert hall Amsterdam. Need I say more? Yo! Word as bond this cat had MAJOR game. Brothas like Marvin Gaye, Billy D, Sam Cooke, they all had a different kind of sexy that Chris Brown, Usher, Idris Elba will never know. Check out towards the end of the video when he starts talking slick. [By the way, here's a fun fact. Did you know Marvin Gaye's name was actually Marvin Gay without the "e"? He actually changed it to be more like his role model Sam Cook"e".]

MUSIC JUNQUI: OLD AS CHEESE XM.I.A. – ‘Bucky Done Gun’

I have a million videos of me dancing to M.I.A.’s music. Maybe one day I will post them but for now enjoy today’s OLD AS CHEESE video…M.I.A. getting down in our BUCKY DONE GUN video.

In an interview with Ashlene Nand, M.I.A. was asked “what the hell does “Bucky Done Gun” mean?“. Her response was:

I don’t know!! (Laughs) I really don’t know. At the time, the concept that I was thinking of was how far we are going to go with gangster culture in rap music. That’s really what I was thinking about. I was thinking about 50 Cent. It started off asPublic Enemy and ended with 50 Cent. What was that journey (for rap music) and how did that happen? In London, Bucky is a slang word for gun. It’s a real British, grime word. So I was thinking, what is the aftermath of gangster rap? Were they going to get into therapy?
